Appalachian Critter Co. is a youth-owned 3D printing business created and operated by 13-year-old West Virginian Silas Young. From his home in Sutton, Silas uses a growing fleet of 3D printers to manufacture colorful articulated animals, creatures, and other unique products that he sells at fairs and festivals across West Virginia.

But the coolest thing about Appalachian Critter Co. may be the young maker behind it. Silas isn't simply selling products made by someone else. Every item on his tables comes from the printers he operates. He manages production, chooses colors and products, builds inventory, prepares for events, works his booth, talks with customers, and is learning firsthand what it takes to run a small business.

What began as a kid's interest in 3D printing has grown into a real West Virginia small business. Along the way, Silas is learning about manufacturing, technology, entrepreneurship, customer service, and the value of creating something himself.

Appalachian Critter Co. represents a different side of West Virginia manufacturing. Manufacturing doesn't always have to begin in a large factory. Sometimes it begins with a 13-year-old kid, an idea, and a 3D printer—and grows from there.
